The Reiki Principles…

Just for today I will not be angry.

Just for today I will not worry.

Just for today I will be grateful.

Just for today I will do my work honestly.

Just for today I will be kind to every living thing.

Before learning about Reiki, the only type of energy I knew about was the type that burned calories. Because at the most basic level, when we diet, we look at calories in versus calories out. Most of the time, simply applying that method should work for most people when it comes to fat loss approaches. For women, it could be a bit more complicated.

Thanks to the many of the expectations placed on us in today’s society, we have become notorious for self-criticism to an extreme level. Any inkling of failure to be perfect can send us on a downward spiral of depression. I was there and I tried my best to hide it, but those closer to me knew how unhappy I was.

One of the best practices that helped me personally with viewing my nutritional practice with a more positive view was directly applying the Reiki Principles I learned through healer training to it.

I started out just generally repeating the principles and applying them to my day. Through meditation I came to an awareness that most of my judgment, guilt and disappointment came from my food. That’s when I decided to be a bit more focused with these principles and it made such a difference.

Here’s how I personally applied them and thought them out. Of course it may be different for you, but I’m sure it will be beneficial.

Just for Today, I will not be angry.

I will not be angry with myself for failing to comply with my nutritional plan. I understand that I am only human and love that I am not perfect. Just because I messed up during this moment does not mean I have failed my program. There is no reason to hate or feel guilty about what I did. Instead, I take this as a little treat and enjoy the moment. After savoring the moment, I keep my goals of self-improvement and love for my body in mind. I can forgive myself and continue to be on track because there are always bumps on the road and detours in every journey.

Just for today, I will not worry.

There is no reason to worry because I have trust in myself. I do not need to hide from situations that may be tempting to me. I am confident that I will do my best with moderation of food and do not deprive myself of social joys due to worrying about losing control. I know that I can learn from each and every experience and use the opportunity to practice finding my best nutritional practices. Even if I slip up, I have no reason to be angry because I now know myself better and can prepare myself for next time.

Just for today, I will be grateful.

Today I get to wake up and feed my body the gift of healthy nutritious food because it does so much for me and it deserves my upmost respect and care. My body has carried me through such tough times and I am so grateful for how it has been there for me and tolerating all my actions, good and bad. I am so lucky to be able to show it love through good quality fuel and healthy exercise daily and I set aside time to take care of my body so that I can better take care of the others I love.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

I will take the time to truthfully examine my emotional reactions to my eating habits and body image. To be fully honest with myself so that I may learn more about whom I really am and what affects me negatively or positively. Only by being honest with myself will I make real improvements and find fulfillment and happiness. Through enhancing my self-awareness I can better practice being in the moment and experience more joy everyday.

Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Before I eat, I will spare a moment to give thanks to the living things that gave up their life so that I may continue mine. I will only take what I need and never more. I will respect their energy that they are passing onto me and not waste it. Their energy will be used to make this world a better place to the best of my ability.

This is the focus I take on applying these principles to my eating and body image habits. It helps me be kinder to myself and also stay more consistent as I don’t begin binging every time I get a little sidetracked.

Simply write these principles down or save it as an image to your phone so that you can pull it up every morning and apply it to your area of focus or daily life in general. I personally have saved it as my home screen on my phone so that it follows me anywhere. Every time I sense a negative thought or emotion, I sit with it and experience it then pull my phone out and go over these principles.

I hope this helps and would love to hear how you have applied these principles to an area of focus in your life.
